One of our favorite summer pastimes has to be backyard barbeques with the whole fam. Dad at the grill, mom keeping an eye on the kids and just sitting around the table with endless laughter and good, simple eats. And with the 4th of July quickly approaching (what better day than Independence Day to host a BBQ, right?), we turned to Macy’s Culinary Council for their tips and tricks on throwing the ultimate backyard BBQ. Here’s what they had to say…

Cut up a good, big watermelon into easy-to-grab wedges for kids of all ages. Then use the scraps to make an ice-cold watermelon basil mojito and place them in small mason jars. To keep both nice and cold, fill a bucket with ice and place the wedges and mojitos right on top.”

I always try to make something red, white and blue, like a cake with whipped cream topped with raspberries blueberries and strawberries, or just serve some fresh berries and a side of whipped cream if you are not in the mood to bake. Most importantly, get ready for the fireworks and have some fun!

It’s not a 4th of July party without BBQ and delicious grilled foods. One of my favorites is the Block Party Ribs with Sweet Q Sauce from my Red Rooster cookbook, offering a balanced blend of sweet, spicy, and salty flavors. And buy some fresh vegetables from your local farmers’ market or grocery store, like corn, asparagus, bell peppers, and mushrooms to throw on the grill.

You have to have a good playlist because that sets the mood and will carry the party. I like to mix different artists and genres, but you can never go wrong with some of Stevie Wonder’s up-tempo hits, Prince, and throwback R&B and hip-hop classics that people can dance to. Make your playlist a day or two in advance so that it’s finished and ready to go by the time you are prepping for the party. If you don’t have time to curate a list, remember that there are music sites online that offer playlists based on the event you are catering to.

Every great party begins with a plan. I’m talking laser focus here: cooking equipment at easy access, abundant utensils and serveware, a plan for trash and a killer playlist. Does the grill need time to heat up? Do you have enough ice? Think it all through.

Get creative as you want with this 4th of July. Want stars-and-stripes themed dinnerware? Yes! Specialty drinks? Sure. But don’t get so lost in those details that you lose sight of why you’re gathering—to celebrate with loved ones and to make sure everyone’s well fed and having a good time. P.S. Try to get everyone a drink in their hand as soon as possible—that works wonders for putting guests at ease.

Plan ahead so you can enjoy the day! Plan for the barbecue in three steps:

1 · Shop and buy seasonal produce

2 · Prep by making dressings and sauces, skewer meat and vegetables and…

3 · Get your guests involved in your cooking — they will enjoy it, and you can relax a bit!

Plan activities (other than just food). Think music, games and trivia—tailor to the age group of your guests, and of course, check your local fireworks display schedule.
