Black and white will never go out of style. Which is why we always recommend keeping a few monochromatic staples in your wardrobe. What will change, however, is how you choose to style your black and white looks. From how to accessorize your ensemble to working in the season’s top trends, here are our rules to rocking black and white like a fashion insider.

Add an unexpected pop of color

Black and white has seen its fair share of pops of red and cobalt blue, so challenge yourself to add a surprising shade. Freshen up your #ootd with a cool mustard yellow jacket or an emerald green tote that plays with monochrome in an interesting way. What other cool color combo can you come up with?

Rock a bold beauty statement

Good news for your beauty look — black and white goes with everything! Time to try out that daring makeup trend that’s all over Instagram. Some of our current favorites are a matte plum lip, the shimmery smoky eye and colorful mascara.

Embrace feminine prints and silhouettes

Black and white style doesn’t always have to have a graphic effect. Play up the duo’s softer side in feminine prints like painted florals and soft silhouettes such as a flared skirt or bell sleeves. The contrast of ladylike style in a stark color palette makes for an interesting fashion statement.

Mix in
Metallic

Make your monochromatic look shine with cool touches of metallic. Play to the color combo’s striking nature with edgy accessories like a studded handbag or sparkly booties. Remember that bold beauty look we were talking about? Hello, glitter eyeliner!

Play
With
Volume

Monochrome fashion is anything but boring when you introduce a fresh style element like volume. Ruffled or flounced sleeves, structured shoulders and full chiffon skirts are all interesting ways to create a dynamic look — no color needed.

  2. Loved the new makeup for 2018. Everything Sparkles. I would like to see clothing geared for the older “still in the professional fields and working or retired” You are cutting off a whole market of women. Black and white has always been one of my favorites especially with a splash of Red.

  3. Where can I find that exact b&w striped shirt? The one on the Macy’s site is NOT that one. Thanks!
