“My mom wasn’t really a good cook, but there were a couple of things she did well. She made a killer cabbage pie, which is meat layered with cabbage, three or four times and then roasted in the oven. That was my mom’s cooking—rustic and simple. What my mom did know, her mom taught her. She knew the importance of having a really good skillet and a heavy-duty dutch oven. Those were things she passed down to me, so I always have high quality pans in my house.”

“The most valuable advice I ever received from my mother was learning how to be confident and articulate in front of a group. It opened more doors than you can imagine—from my television show, to media appearances, and even commanding the room in front of the kitchen staff.”

“Mom is the most incredible home cook I know—she made everything taste so good. I was always told to make everything with passion, believe in myself and have respect for the ingredients; if not, just don’t even bother! She also told me to stay out of the kitchen if I was upset or mad about anything, because it would show in my cooking.”

“When I was growing up, my mother was a working mom, but when she came home every night, she prepared dinner. She was very disciplined and never wasted food. She was also very organized, so any leftovers were used the following day in another meal, in another dish. I learned minimalism from my mother, not to say her meals were anything but delicious!”
